The understated elegance of vintage women beginning in the late 1940s up to 1950s demanded glittering statements such as classic accessories, makeup and undergarments. Thanks to Christian Dior (1905—1957) who created an atmosphere that women gladly obliged for the love of accessories. His unique way was through the introduction of a poetic collection, called The New Look that emphasized the dramatic accessories such as white gloves, umbrellas, shoes, handbag, and hat.
The fact that women couldn't go out without a purse was a clear indication of accessories's obsession among women. Women added a touch of glam with sleek yet colorful makeup. Research showed that—about 11% of all advertisements were related to makeup in the 1950s. Makeup producers sometimes offered their products for free to women.
Most women did pedicures—and often had nail varnish in their collection of essential items. The invention of plastic shoes enabled women to flaunt their decorative toenails. As more and more women became style-conscious, nail polish and makeup were meticulously applied to give a subtle look that is coordinated with the color of their ensembles.
1950s had seen women fall in love with statement charm bracelets that adorned their wrists. We can't neglect the fact that there are still plenty of people who wear charm bracelets today.
Although men didn't accessorize as much as women but they had few sparkling pieces that refined their styles. Accessories like cufflinks, wristwatch, tie bars and collar pins with sleek details such as gold, silver or palladium were the must-have pieces for a best dressed man.
