Definitions for some basic Terminology used in the perfume industry

An absolute is a concentrated mixture of aromas that is extracted after the pure aromatic compounds of plants are dissolved in an organic solvent such as hexane or ethanol. 

 

 Accord is a sensory blend of two or three scents or ingredients to create a completely unique scent. Accord is considered the base of the perfume. 

 

 Aldehyde: an olfactory expression of the effects of excessive use of aliphatic aldehydes such as C10 aldehydes. 

 

 Balance is an equal proportion of perfumes that blend together.


 Base notes: These are the perfume ingredients that remain on the skin when applied. 

 

 Concrete refers to the extraction of hydrocarbon components from plants. 

 

 A formula is a complete percentage list of ingredients  needed to produce a fragrance. 

 

 Hedonic refers to the value of pleasure  you get from smelling a scent. 

 

 Middle notes: These are the ingredients that are considered the heart of the fragrance. They usually last about 20-60 minutes. 

 

 Top notes: This is the first pleasant smell when you open a perfume. These are the most volatile ingredients of the perfume.
